Some research on anti-NS, anarchist or communist/anti-capitalist BM bands

Recently S. (the guy behind Crucified Bastard) has done a big search for black metal bands who claim to be anarchist, communist/anti-capitalist, or just against NSBM. The results were posted on our forum, and here I'll try to sum them up.

First of all, the USBM band Grinning Death's Head is claimed to have anarchist lyrics. There's very little info about the band, but they're signed to Youth Attack Records, which is a hardcore label. Although some people dislike YAR, because (according to their words) it is a commercial project which is releasing hipster garbage. Don't know if it's true, but I feel better to restrain from posting any of YA releases in my blog.

Then Reencarnación, a black/thrash metal/punk band from Colombia. Their releases got ridiculously low ratings on Metal-Archives, but honestly, their latest album "Más Hombres, Menos Estatuas" isn't THAT bad. Yes, it's just generic thrash metal, nothing special, but still listenable. As for their most well-known release, "Metal 888" (1988) - it's just VERY raw proto-black metal/punk in the vein of Venom and early Bathory. The extremely low quality of production is forgivable, I think, because it was one of the first such releases in 80's Latin America.

Other bands found by S. include Raven's Blut (for me that band look really stupid, though), Fredsdue (anarcho-black metal from Norway most likely a joke band), On Horns Impaled (typical "true" black metal at a first glance, but the members are anarchists), Euphoric Mutilation, Kata Sarka, Torment, The True Beltez, Thy Wicked, Voldsom, Knowhere (yes, they appeared on Burning Roots compilation!), AX, Fear Of Existence (anarcho-primitivist BM from Baltimore), Hagalaz, Evilords (anti-NSBM), Schwarzkristall (against NSBM too), Zextencia Interina, Dunkelheit ("NSBM, Rassisten und sonst irgendein Dreck hat hier nix zu suchen.....Fuck off an Die!!!"), Waldgeflüster ("WALDGEFLÜSTER is no part of NSBM. There is no place for leaders in free thinking!"), Vessel, Dead and Forgotten (anarcho-pagan BM from Italy), Fallen Tyrant, Gorphyryac and Ygramul. + my own discoveries: Whip (grind BM), Noia (Italian blackened crust), VÅLD (Swedish blackened crust), and Modern Dark Age. A pretty huge list of bands to check out, you see.

Additionally, the members of Russian political hardcore/screamo band Namatjira started a new black metal project called Preface To The Dead Sea. Warborn / Hospise split album is yet to be released, but the Warborn's side of the split is already available online. I also found Embers' side of their split w/ Book Of Belial, and it's just AWESOME. Excellent black/doom metal, really simular to JWP or Terzij De Horde. I still can't find the tracks by Book Of Belial, though.

That's enough for today, I think. Don't know when the next update will be - maybe in July, when several RABM bands are about to release their albums. See you, and don't forget to visit our forum!

Adamennon - "Il Rumore Della Rovina" (2007)

ADAMENNON "Il Rumore Della Rovina"

Year: 2007
Genre: Dark Ambient
Country: Italy

Track List:
  1. Esperienza Extrasensoriale
  2. Profano Sepolcro
  3. La Sottile Lama Del Proprio Essere
  4. Silenzio Nella Culla Dell'Agonia
  5. Conflitto Interiore
  6. Il Non Limite Nell'Illusione
  7. L'Ennesima Lacrima Solitaria
  8. Anestesifobia
  9. Lugubre Solitudine Volontaria

"Il Rumore Della Rovina" is the biggest work by Adamennon, who's an ex-member of anarcho-punk/grindcore/thrash metal band SSWIISSH!!, and also a member of several other experimental/ambient projects (Locomotor MortisHabitantibus In TerraTadmir Aor X). I've already posted some of his albums last year. Don't know if anybody of you liked them, 'cause it certainly isn't music for every crust/BM fan - it's pure dark ambient/noise. By the way, Adam himself is a supporter of RABM scene and eco-anarchist movement, and he's a very nice person (at least in my impression...)

Terzij de Horde - "A Rage of Rapture Against the Dying of Light" (2010)

TERZIJ DE HORDE "A Rage of Rapture Against the Dying of Light"

Year: 2010
Genre: Post-Black Metal
Country: Netherlands

Track List:
  1. Prometheans
  2. Vertigo: the Mithraic Ritual
  3. The Roots of Doomsday Anxiety
  4. Non Timetis Messor
DOWNLOAD

It's not a coincidence that I've posted this EP right after JWP's two albums: Terzij de Horde are very close to JWP in terms of sound, though they're much more of post-black metal than everything else. Despite its not very comprehensible title (disregard that, I just don't know much about Welsh poetry), "A Rage of Rapture Against the Dying of Light" is a very good EP, so I recommend it to everyone who like progressive black metal. And according to their bassist: "We are all definitely leftist people, but we've decided not to stand out as a political band, because we don't want to be "hijacked" by a certain label. But as for me, I'm an anarcho-syndicalist, and the rest of the band is left to extreme-left".

Militia - "Everything Is One" (2005)

  8. The Hidden Connection
  9. The New Found Dawn
  10. The Limitation Of Language
  11. On Common Ground
  12. The Relative Truth
  13. Everything Is One

It's latest up-to-date album by Militia, and for me it's slightly less dark and more melodic than "The Black Flag Hoisted". You think about experimental industrial as a very noisy music, but "Everything Is One" is definitely not that case. According to some sources, Militia's music was much inspired by Test Dept., who were anarchists (or at least very left-wing) too. Anyway, Militia are one of the very few bands on the martial industrial scene who dare to proclaim their anarchist views openly, so I think they deserve our support.

And now, here comes something completely different from everything I've posted before. It's not black metal, or any other kind of metal/punk at all - it is experimental industrial/ambient music based on percussion and sampling. And of course, it's inspired by radical anarchist beliefs - just look at the tracks' names. Martial industrial and neofolk scene always seemed to be predominately right-wing, so it was very surprising to me to discover such band as Militia. Furthermore, the band has a relatively long history (over 20 years of activity):

"Militia is a Belgian industrial percussion band. It was founded in 1989 by the multi-instrumentalist Frank Gorissen and wind instrument player Jo Billen and now 6 musicians are involved. The band is known for its use of self made percussion and wind instruments and the scrap material they transform into musical instruments. The band's music is often inspired by the anarchic and atheist social views and their concern about our natural environment, themes that can be found in most of their lyrics and statements"

See this Wikipedia article for more info about Militia (the article is very informative and has lots of external links). Or you can just download both two sides of the album, and enjoy some contemporary anarchist music which isn't not based on punk at all (it's a very rare thing, I guess).

Selva Obscura - "In Noctis Tenebris" (2009)

SELVA OBSCURA "In Noctis Tenebris"

Year: 2009
Genre: Depressive Black Metal
Country: Italy

Track List:
  1. Intro / Maligne Presenze Sulle Rive Del Lago
  2. Sacrificio
  3. Boschi Dimenticati
  4. Errando Nelle Oscure Notti Invernali
  5. 12 Agosto 1944 (Monumento Alla Resistenza Italiana)
  6. Outro / La Via Che Porta Alle Stelle
DOWNLOAD

Selva Obscura are a duo from Italy, whose guitarist/vocalist also play in bands called Depressio Aeterna and Manifesto Comunista, and he does enjoy the RABM scene. Unfortunately I can't say much about their music: it's not bad for a 1st demo, but nothing special either. But we must take in account that these guys are very young, and it's their debut - so I hope they'll produce a lot of good music in the future, after they get more experience as musicians. P.s. The track #5 is about the Sant'Anna di Stazzema massacre, I guess.

Заводь - split w/ Dirtpill & Zuboroth (2010)

ЗАВОДЬ "3-way split w/ Dirtpill & Zuboroth"

Year: 2010
Genre: Blackened Crust / Grindcore
Country: Ukraine

Track List:
  1. Аахенский Зверь
  2. Magesår
  3. Вчера Догорели Костры Последних Рассветов
  4. Изгибы Марлевых Масок
  5. Эра Волопаса
DOWNLOAD (alternative link)

I've already posted one EP by these Kharkiv guys, who previously participated in Life Is Hell. Now their lyrics became less straightforwardly political and more focused on abstract subjects, but it isn't nesessary a bad thing. Here's their latest release - a split album with Dirtpill (Russia) and Zuboroth (Belarus). I'll post only Заводь's side, because the other two bands are playing some kind of sludge/drone/noise rock, and it isn't most people's cup of tea. If you still want the whole item, you can get it in a lot of places (gnwp.ru, for example).

Yes, they're well aware of the RABM movement, but they don't label themselves "RABM" - they're playing a mix of crust, black metal and grindcore/powerviolence, so their music doesn't belong to any particular style. Additionally, they don't divide black metal scene by the political stance, but you can be sure that they're against racism, sexism and another kinds of shit like that, and they don't need neither gods, nor masters.

...By the way, what's with the title of the 1st track ("The Beast Of Aachen")? I know about the Beast of Gévaudan, but what's the beast of Aachen? Even Google search yields no results.

Nicola Tesla - demo (2010)

NICOLA TESLA "demo"

Year: 2010
Genre: Raw Black Metal / Experimental
Country: Russia

DOWNLOAD

Though being apparently home-recorded and therefore sounding very harsh and raw, this demo became one of the most downloaded releases on gnwp.ru this month. No tracklist for it, and almost no info about the band, except for one blurred b/w photo (according to it, there are only two members in the band). However, I think we can feel safe about their political beliefs, since gnwp.ru always was a good source of leftist music. And it's a little strange to see such a band in Moscow - in my opinion, their sound is more akin to US raw black metal bands.

P.S. Yes, for some reason their logo is apparently drawn wrong ("Nicila" instead of "Nicola")...

Our Last Rain - "Different Borders Of Morality" (2010)

OUR LAST RAIN "Different Borders Of Morality"

Year: 2010
Genre: Acoustic/Ambient
Country: Russia

Track List:
  1. Different Borders Of Morality
  2. Death Never Dies
DOWNLOAD

Someone asked me for the 2nd demo by Our Last Rain, and here it is. For me it's not as good as the first one (for example, the 1st track would be better without vocals... if I could call it so), but anyway it's good for any fan of nature-inspired ambient music. I couldn't find much info about the project, but I probably was wrong about the connection to (A)xidanc(E) and CBTS - the guy behind Our Last Rain is most likely from St.Petersburg...disregard that, he's indeed a member of Axidance. And I'm really surprised of how well-known his project is outside Russia.
